Three signature tiers
eIDAS distinguishes (1) Simple Electronic Signature (SES) — typed name, scanned signature; minimal verification. (2) Advanced Electronic Signature (AdES) — cryptographically linked to signer + tamper-evident. (3) Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) — AdES + qualified certificate from a recognised Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP) + qualified signature creation device. QES is LEGALLY EQUIVALENT TO HANDWRITTEN SIGNATURE EU-wide.
Cyprus applies EU Regulation 910/2014 (eIDAS) directly — a regulation has direct effect without national transposition. The 2024 'eIDAS 2.0' amendment (Regulation 2024/1183) adds the European Digital Identity Wallet framework + tightened QTSP requirements. Cyprus's national supplementary framework is in the Electronic Signatures + Electronic Trust Services Law 2018 (as amended).
